What is a recreation sessions An organised period of time where participants engage in various recreational activities.
Non-Instructional A session where there is no formal instructions or instructor Eg, bush walk
Non-competitive A session where the goal is not to win, but improve heath, skills and relationships Eg Yoga
Games-Based A session centred around a game designed to entertain, engage and promote social interactions. Eg, Monopoly night
Creative program A session incorporating arts, crafts and creative expression to foster creativity and innovation among like-minded people Eg, Arts and crafts club
Social Interaction A session designed to foster the building of new relationships promoting a sense of community. Eg, mothers club
After School A session aimed at engaging children and youth in fun and activities outside of school hours. Eg, After school arts and crafts.
Teaching Involves imparting knowledge of a skill or subject from one person to another.
Training Involves developing a skill through repeated, targeted drills over time.
Coaching Involves providing targeted feedback and guidance to improve performance.
Environmental factors Noise, Weather, Ventilation.
Disabilities Have a casual respectful conversation asking about their needs and preferences, casually mention the tailoring of the session for them.
Medical Have a thorough conversation gathering insight on their condition and how the session can be made more suitable.
Age Varying physical capabilities, interests and attention spans which impacts how they listen to instruction.
Injuries Speak to them, what they can and can't do and what has been recommended, avoid stress on the injured spot causing re-injury.
Level of experience Significantly influences engagement and enjoyment. Having options based on skill level will keep the beginners coming back and the more advanced engaged.
Older people Physical needs, Emotional needs social connections and self-esteem boost, Motivational needs.
Leading an activity CAPOCEANIAPT Clear and concise, Active listening, Positive reinforcement, Open ended questions, Constructive, Empathy, Adaptability, Non verbal, Inclusive, Active engagement. Pace. Teamwork
Provide instructions BUVAB Be clear and concise, Use step by step, Visual, Ask questions, Be positive.
Evaluate Session PLASS Participant feedback, Leader communication, Activity suitability, Structure and timing, Suitability of environment resources.
