chapter 4 types of fractures
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| comminuted | bone breaks into many fragments (common in older ppl, bones are more brittle) |
| compression | bone is crushed (common in osteoporotic bones or older ppl) |
| depressed | broken bone portion is pressed inward (skull fracture) |
| impacted | broken bone ends are forced into each other (occurs when someone attempts to break a fall w/ outstretched arms) |
| spiral | ragged break occurs when excessive twisting forces are applied to a bone (sports fracture) |
| greenstick | bone breaks incompletely like a rose stem (common in children, bones are more flexible) |
| compound fracture | bone ruptures through skin (open) |
| stress fracture | micro fractures in a bone, occurs w/ repetitive force/overuse (running) |
| tendon | attaches bone to muscle (strain) |
| ligament | attaches bone to bone (sprain) |
