How many casualties? Who had most? 16 - 20 million dead, 22 million wounded. Russia had the most
Why did Russia have the most casualties despite having the largest standing army? They had little mobilization
What is the major effect of WW1? Map of Europe greatly changes
What is militarism? Greatly and rapidly expanding and investing in your military to be more powerful
What is the arms race competition to build up weaponarry/militarism before another country does
What is mobilization, what was the key to it? The ability to move troops, trains were the key to mobilization
Who had the 2 greatest navies? Great Britain and Germany
What is the triple alliance? Where were they located? Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy. located close together in the inside
What is the triple entente? Where were they located? France, Russia, Great Britain. Located surrounding the triple alliance on the outside
Who had the upper hand between the triple alliance and the triple entente? Neither, both were equal
How did imperialism play into WW1? Competition for territories caused conflict and rivalry.
Who were the "Great Powers"? Germany, Austria-Hungary, Great Britain, Russia, Italy, France
What was the Alsace-Lorraine? Territory that was fought over by France and Germany, switched hands over it many times.
What was the crisis in Balkans? It was taken over by Austria-Hungary
What is the "Powder Keg" of Europe? Balkans Peninsula. (Diverse area with many ethnic groups)
Who/What was the Black Hand group? What was their goal? Serbian Nationalist Group. Goal was to recreate greater Serbia
Who were in the central powers Germany, Austria-Hungary, Ottoman empire, Bulgaria
Who were in the Allied Forces Russia, France, Great Britain, Italy (1915), USA (1917).
Did Russia leave the war? Why? Russia leaves war eventually due to it becoming a communist country.
Where was the western front located? Trenches were between France and Germany
What is contraband Illegal goods (weaponarry and aid for warfare at the time)
What is unrestricted submarine warfare? Who didn't follow it? International law states that civilian ships must be warned before being sunk. Germans didn't follow this.
What is the Lusitania? U.S Ship sunken by Germans, Didn't follow rules of unrestricted submarine warfare
What is the Sussex Pledge? Germany pledges "not to sink merchant ships & passenger ships without warning"
When was the Sussex Pledge broken? Feb 1st. 1917
What was the Zimmerman note? Germany tries to forge an alliance with Mexico to get them to go against the U.S. It was intercepted by the U.S
