Thermal Energy

TermDefinition
Precipitation The act of water falling from the sky in the form of rain, snow, sleet, or hail.
Evaporation The process of liquid water changing into gas (water vapor).
Conduction The transfer of heat or electricity through a substance (like a metal wire).
Radiation Waves of energy sent out by sources of heat or light. For example, the sun warming the Earth.
Convection The transfer of heat through a liquid or gas because of density changes.
Humidity Water vapor or moisture in the air. High humidity feels sticky and uncomfortable
Conductor Anything that allows heat, electricity, or sound to pass through. Metals are good conductors.
Insulator A material that does not conduct heat, electricity, or sound. Examples: glass, rubber, or porcelain.
Transpiration Plants release water vapor through their leaves.
Perspiration Moisture (sweat) given off by our bodies.
Moisture A small amount of liquid in the air or on a surface.
Phase Change A change in matter from one phase to another. Examples: solid → liquid, liquid → gas, gas → liquid, liquid → solid.
Solid A form of matter with a definite shape and size
Liquid A form of matter that flows and takes the shape of its container.
Gas A form of matter that moves freely and takes the shape of its container.
Motion of Molecules / Molecular Motion The process or action of molecules moving continuously.
