VMT Chapter 1

Prefix Word part found at the beginning of a word. Indicates location, time, or status.
Root Word part that gives the essential meaning of the word. Cannot stand alone, suffix must be added to complete the term
Combining Vowel Single vowel, usually an o, added to the end of a root to make the word easier to pronounce.
Combining Form Combination of the root and the combining vowel.
Suffix Word part found at the end of a word. Indicates procedure, condition, disease, or disorder.
pre- before
Perioperative Pertaining to the period around an operation or the period before, during, and after an operation.
post- after
Postoperative After an operation
Preoperative Before or preceding an operation.
Arthroscope Instrument used to visually examine the joint.

Gastritis Inflammation of the stomach.
