Archipelago A group or chain of islands.
Loess Fine, yellowish-brown topsoil made up of particles of silt, and clay, carried by the wind.
Population Density Measure of how crowded a place is, defined as the number of people living in a specific area, typically expressed as the number of individuals per square kilometer or square mile
Tsunami series of very large ocean waves caused by underwater earthquakes, volcanoes, or landslides. These waves can move very fast and become much taller when they reach the coast, causing major damage.
Autonomous Region An area within a country that has the right to govern itself and make decisions on certain matters, while still being part of the country.
Cultural Revolution Policy developed by Mao Zedong in China in the 1960s to preserve Chinese communist principles.
Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) Area in which a treaty between states and military powers forbid military activities; often also referred to as the border between North and South Korea since 1953.
Dissidents A citizen who speaks out against government policies
Dynasty A ruling house or continuing family of rulers, especially in China.
Hermit Kingdom A country that willingly isolates itself from the rest of the world.
Great Leap Forward Economic and social policy under Mao Zedong in China that practiced communist principles and collectivization.
One-Child Policy A Chinese government policy from 1979 to 2015 that prohibited families from having more than one child in hopes to curb population growth.
Special Economic Zone (SEZ) Designated areas within a country that operate under different economic regulations than the rest of the country.
Atheist A person who does not believe in a God.
