| atom | the smallest unit of a chemical element, consisting of a nucleus at its center and electrons that orbit it |
| element | each of more than one hundred substances that cannot be chemically interconverted or broken down into simpler substances and are primary constituents of matter. |
| proton | a stable subatomic particle occurring in all atomic nuclei, with a positive electric charge equal in magnitude to that of an electron, but of opposite sign. |
| neutron | a stable subatomic particle occurring in all atomic nuclei, with a positive electric charge equal in magnitude to that of an electron, but of opposite sign. |
| electron | a stable subatomic particle with a charge of negative electricity, found in all atoms and acting as the primary carrier of electricity in solids. |
| isotope | each of two or more forms of the same element that contain equal numbers of protons |
| ion | an atom or molecule with a net electric charge due to the loss or gain of one or more electrons |
| compound | a thing that is composed of two or more separate elements; a mixture. |
| molecule | a group of atoms bonded together, representing the smallest fundamental unit of a chemical compound that can take part in a chemical reaction. |
| ionic bond | a type of chemical bond formed by the electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions, which are atoms that have gained or lost electrons |
| covalent bond | a chemical bond formed by the sharing of electron pairs between atoms, typically nonmetals |
