dependent clauses can stand by itself or with a dependent expresses a complete thought
simple sentence consists of a single independent clauses that includes a subject and a verb
compound sentence joins two independent clauses with the help of a comma and a coordinating conjunction or just a semicolon
complex sentence a single independent clause and a dependent clause *will always contain a subordinate conjunction
compound complex sentence combines two or more independent clauses with at least one dependent clause
