sentence types

TermDefinition
Independent clauses Can stand alone by itself, expresses a complete thought, subject and predicate no conjunction.
dependent clause Cannot stand by itself, do not express a complete thought, conjunction, subject, and predicate.
simple sentence consists of a single independent clause that includes a subject and verb (predicate)
Compound sentence Joins two independent clauses with the help of a comma and a coordinating conjunction or just a semicolon
Complex sentence A single independent and dependent clause will always contain a subordinating conjunction
Compound complex sentence combines two or more dependent clauses with at least one independent clause
