sentence types
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Independent clauses | Can stand alone by itself, expresses a complete thought, subject and predicate no conjunction. |
| dependent clause | Cannot stand by itself, do not express a complete thought, conjunction, subject, and predicate. |
| simple sentence | consists of a single independent clause that includes a subject and verb (predicate) |
| Compound sentence | Joins two independent clauses with the help of a comma and a coordinating conjunction or just a semicolon |
| Complex sentence | A single independent and dependent clause will always contain a subordinating conjunction |
| Compound complex sentence | combines two or more dependent clauses with at least one independent clause |
