Sentence Types

TermDefinition
Independent Clause Can stand alone by itself. Expresses a complete thought. Subject + Predicate. (No conjunction)
Dependent clauses Cannot Stand alone by themselves. Do not express a complete thought. Subordinating conjunctions + subject+ predicate.
Simple Sentence consists of a single independent clause that includes a subject and a verb (predicate).
Compound Sentence joins two independent clauses with the help of a comma and a coordinating conjunction or just a semicolon.
Complex Sentence A single independent clause and a dependent clause.* Will always contain a subordinating conjunction.
Compound-Complex Sentence Combines two or more independent clauses with at least one dependent clause.
