Sentence Types

TermDefinition
Independent Clause Can stand by itself, Expresses a complete thought. (Subject + Predicate, no conjunction).
Dependent Clause Cannot stand by themselves, do not express a complete thought, (Subordinate conjunction + subject + predicate).
Simple Sentence Consists of a single, independent clause that includes a subject and a verb (predicate).
Compound Sentence Joins two independent clauses with the help of a comma and a coordinating conjunction, or just a semicolon.
Complex Sentence A single independent clause and a dependent clause, will always contain a subordinate conjunction.
Compound-Complex Sentence Combines two or more independent clauses with at least one dependent clause.
