TermDefinition
Independent Clause Can stand along by itself. Expresses a complete thought. Subject plus predicate (no conjunctions)
Dependent Clause Cannot stand along by themselves. Does not express a complete thought.
Simple Sentence Consists of a single. independent Clause that includes a subject and a verb (predicate)
Compound sentence Joints two independent clauses with the help of a comma and a coordinating conjunction on or just a semicolon.
Complex Sentence A single independent clause and a dependent Clause. *Will always contain a subordinate conjunction (because, after, since, etc.)
Compound-Complex Sentence Combines two or more independent clauses with at least on e dependent clause.
