sentence types

TermDefinition
Independent clause can stand alone by itself. expresses a complete thought. subject predicate (no conjunction)
Dependent clause cannot stand alone by itself. does not express a complete thought.
Simple sentence consists of a single independent clause. (includes a subject and a predict)
compound sentence joins two independent clauses with the help of a comma and a coordinating conjunction . OR a semicolon.
coordinating conjunctions (FANBOYS) For,And, Nor,But,Or,Yet,So
Complex sentence A single independent clause and a dependent clause. Contains a subordinate conjunction.
compound-complex sentence Combines two or more independent clauses with at least one independent clause.
