sentence types
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Independent clause | can stand alone by itself. expresses a complete thought. subject predicate (no conjunction) |
| Dependent clause | cannot stand alone by itself. does not express a complete thought. |
| Simple sentence | consists of a single independent clause. (includes a subject and a predict) |
| compound sentence | joins two independent clauses with the help of a comma and a coordinating conjunction . OR a semicolon. |
| coordinating conjunctions (FANBOYS) | For,And, Nor,But,Or,Yet,So |
| Complex sentence | A single independent clause and a dependent clause. Contains a subordinate conjunction. |
| compound-complex sentence | Combines two or more independent clauses with at least one independent clause. |
