Sentence Types
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Independent Clause | Can stand alone, expresses a complete thought, subject + predicate (no conjunction) |
| Dependent Clause | Cannot stand by themselves, do not express a complete thought |
| Simple sentence | Consists of a single, independent clause that includes a subject and a verb (predicate) |
| Compound Sentence | Joins two independent clauses with the help of a comma and a coordination conjunction or just a semicole |
| Complex Sentence | A single independent clause and a dependent clause *will always contain a suberdinate conjunction (because, after, since , etc.) |
| Compound-Complex Sentence | combines two or more independent clauses with at least one dependent clause |
