Sentence Types

TermDefinition
Independent Clause Can stand alone, expresses a complete thought, subject + predicate (no conjunction)
Dependent Clause Cannot stand by themselves, do not express a complete thought
Simple sentence Consists of a single, independent clause that includes a subject and a verb (predicate)
Compound Sentence Joins two independent clauses with the help of a comma and a coordination conjunction or just a semicole
Complex Sentence A single independent clause and a dependent clause *will always contain a suberdinate conjunction (because, after, since , etc.)
Compound-Complex Sentence combines two or more independent clauses with at least one dependent clause
