sentence types

TermDefinition
independent clause Can stand alone by itself. Expresses a complete thought. Subject + Predicate (no conjunction)
dependent clause Cannot stand alone by themselves. Do not express a complete thought.
Simple sentence consists of a single, independent clause that includes a subject and a verb (Predicate)
compound sentence joins two independent clauses with the help of a comma and a coordination conjunction or just a semicolon
complex sentence a single independent clause and dependent clause *will always contain a sobordinate conjunction (because, after, since, etc)
compound-complex sentence combines two or more independent clauses with atleast one dependent clause.
