sentence types
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| independent clause | Can stand alone by itself. Expresses a complete thought. Subject + Predicate (no conjunction) |
| dependent clause | Cannot stand alone by themselves. Do not express a complete thought. |
| Simple sentence | consists of a single, independent clause that includes a subject and a verb (Predicate) |
| compound sentence | joins two independent clauses with the help of a comma and a coordination conjunction or just a semicolon |
| complex sentence | a single independent clause and dependent clause *will always contain a sobordinate conjunction (because, after, since, etc) |
| compound-complex sentence | combines two or more independent clauses with atleast one dependent clause. |
