| Independent clause | Can stand by itself or with a dependent. Express a complete thought. Subject + predicate ( No conjunction) |
| Dependent clause | Cannot stand by themselves. Do not express a complete thought. Conjunction + subject + Predicate. |
| Simple sentence | Consists of a single, independent clause that includes a subject and a verb (predicate) |
| Compound sentence | Joins two independent clauses with the help of a comma and a cordinating conjuction or just a semicolon. |
| Complex sentence | A single independent clause and a dependent clause |
| Compound-complex sentence | combines two or more independent clauses with at least one dependent clause |
