Sentence Types

TermDefinition
Independent Clause Can stand alone by itself and expresses a complete thought. Subject+Predicate (no conjunction)
Dependent Clause Can't stand alone by itself and doesn't express a complete thought.
Simple Sentence Consists of a single, independent clause that includes a subject and a verb (Predicate)
Compound Sentence Joins 2 independent clauses with the help of a comma and a coordinating conjunction, or just a semicolon.
Complex Sentence A single independent clause and a dependent clause. *Will always contain a subordinate conjunction.
Compound-Complex Sentence Combines 2 or more independent clauses with at least 1 dependent clause.
