Sentence Types

Clauses

TermDefinition
Independent Clause Can stand alone by itself, expresses a complete thought.
Dependent Clause Cannot stand by themselves, do not express a complete thought.
Simple Sentence Consists of a single, independent clause that includes a subject and a verb.
Compound Sentence Joins two independent clauses with the help of a comma and a coordinating conjunction or just a semicolon.
Complex Sentence A single independent clause and a dependent clause. Will always contain a subordinate conjunction (because, after, since, etc)
Compound-Complex Sentence Combines two or more independent clauses with at least one dependent clause.
