Sentence Types
Clauses
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Independent Clause | Can stand alone by itself, expresses a complete thought. |
| Dependent Clause | Cannot stand by themselves, do not express a complete thought. |
| Simple Sentence | Consists of a single, independent clause that includes a subject and a verb. |
| Compound Sentence | Joins two independent clauses with the help of a comma and a coordinating conjunction or just a semicolon. |
| Complex Sentence | A single independent clause and a dependent clause. Will always contain a subordinate conjunction (because, after, since, etc) |
| Compound-Complex Sentence | Combines two or more independent clauses with at least one dependent clause. |
