Early Republic Vocab

Term Definition
political party (n) a group of people that share similar goals and opinions about government.
inauguation (n) a ceremony introducing a new president into office
precedent (n) something done or said that becomes a example for others to follow; an example or guide
foreign policy (n) a government's plan of action in dealing with other nations
domestic policy (n) a goverment's plan of action in dealing with issues and needs in their own county
neutrality (n) a county that doesn't favor any side in a dispute involving other countries
embargo (n) a prohibition or blocking of trade with a certain county: a ban on trade: when a government refuses to trade with another country
nullify (v) to legally overturn; to make something invalid
monroe doctrine (n) president Monroe's foreign policy stating that European countries should not interfere in the Americans
immigrant (n) a person who moves from their home country to live in a new country
nativism (n) belief that native-born Americans are superior to foreigners; the practice of favoring nativ-born citizens over immigrants
market revolution (n) a change in the United States' market system (how buyers and sellers trade for prouducts and services)
industrial revolution (n) a change in how people made goods; the transtion from creating goods by hand to using machines
abolitionist (n) a person who fights for the end of slavery
reform (v) changing wrong or bad conditions to make them better
accumulate (n) to gather in large amounts
cabinet (n) a group of advisers to a president
comproimse (n) a settlement of dispute by each side giving up some demands; a settlement of disagreements reached by each side giving up some of what it wants in order to reach an agreement
caucus (n) a meeting of members of a political party to choose candidates for coming elections
sedition (n) activities aimed at weakening the established goverement by inciting resistance or rebllion to authority
