Vocab Kelp Forest lesson 1-3

Algae A multicellular organism that lives in water and produces its own food through photosynthesis
Nutrients A substance that provides nourishment for growth and maintenance of life
Phytoplankton A microorganism living in water that consists of a single cell that produces it own food through photosynthesis
Microorganism An organism that can be seen only with the aid of a microscope and that typically consists of only a single cell
Photosynthesis The chemical process in plants that use water, sunlight, and carbon dioxide to produce oxygen and sugar
Element a pure substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances by chemical reactions
Chemical Reaction A chemical change: a process that changes substances into new substances
Atom The smallest unit of an element that has the properties of that element
Molecule Two or more atoms joined together
Glucose A simple sugar that is an important energy source in living organisms and is a component of many carbohydrates
Transformation A dramatic change in form or appearance
Conversion The process of changing or causing something to change from one form to another
Products Substances formed as a result of a chemical reaction
Reactants Substances that are consumed to create a chemical reaction
