sentence types

TermDefinition
independent clause can stand by itself or with a dependent express a complete thought subject+predicate (no conjunctions)
dependent clause. cannot stand by itself, do not express a complete thought conjunction+subject+predicate.
simple sentence consist of a single independent clause that includes a subject and a verb (predicate)
compound sentence joins two independent clauses with the help of a comma and a coordinating conjunction or just a semi colon.
complex sentence a single independent clause and a dependent clause. will always contain as subordinating conjunction .
compound-complex sentence combines two or more independent clauses with at least a dependent clause.
