Sentence types

Clauses and sentence

QuestionAnswer
Independent clause Can stand by itself or with a dependent variable. It expresses a complete thought. subject + Predicate (no conjunction.)
Dependent Clause Cannot stand by itself.They don't express a complete thought. conjunction + Predicate + subject.
Simple sentence Consists of a single independent clause that includes a subject and a verb. (Predicate.)
Compound sentence Joins two independent clauses with the help of a comma and a coordinating conjunction or just a semi colon.
Complex sentence A single independent clause and a dependent clause. will always contain a subordinate conjunction. (because, after, since, etc.)
Compound-complex sentence combines two or more independent clauses with at least one dependent clause.
