Sentence Types

TermDefinition
Independent clause Can stand by itself or with a dependent (Expresses a complete thought) ( subject + Predicate )
Dependent clause Cannot stand by themselves ( they do not express a complete thought )
Simple sentence Consists of a single, Independent Clause that includes a subject and a verb ( Predicate )
Compound sentence Joins 2 independent clauses with the help of a comma and a coordinating conjunction or just a semicolon
Complex sentence A single independent clause and a dependent clause * will always contain a subordinate conjunction ( because, after )
Compound-Complex sentence Combines two or more independent clauses with at least one dependent clause
