TermDefinition
Independent clause Can stand by itself or until dependent expresses a complete thought. Subject+Predicate+No conjunction
Dependent clause Cannot stand by themselves , not a complete thought . Conjunction+Predicate +Subject
Simple sentence Consists of a single independent clause that includes a subject and a verb (Predicate)
Compound sentence Joins two independent clauses with the help of a comma and a coordination conjunction, or just a semicolon
Complex sentence A single independent clause and an independent clause *will always contain a subordinating conjunction: because, after, since,
Compound Complex sentence Combines two or more Independent clauses . At least one dependent clause
