Sentence types.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Independent Clause | Can stand by itself or with a dependent. Express a complete thought. |
| Dependent clause | Cannot stand by themselves. Do not express complete thoughts, |
| Simple Sentence | Consists of a single, independent Clause that includes a subject and a verb/ predicate. |
| Compound sentence | Joins two independent clauses with the help of a comma and a coordinating conjunction or just a semicolon. |
| Complex sentence | A single independent Clause and a dependent clause. Will always contain a subordinating conjunction (because, after, since, etc.) |
| Compound-complex sentence | Combines two or more independent clauses with at least one dependent clause. |
