It's about debate

TermDefinition
Two sides of debate Aff and Neg. Aff is for change and Neg says the status quo is fine.
The yearlong topic Resolution
Resolved: The United States federal government should significantly increase its development and/or exploration of the Arctic.
What is the case? Advantages in doing the plan; by the AFF.
The 5 stock issues. Significance, Harms, Inherency, Solvency, Topicality.
What is the offcase? Arguments outside of the case debate.
Offcase positions: Disadvantages, counter plan, Topicality, critiques.
Definitions of the stock issues. Inherency: Why the world is failing. Signi and Harms: Significance and bad things (Impact) Solvency: Why your proposal solved the harms Topicality: The plan has to support the resolution.
1AC goals: Present a plan
1NC goals: Attack the case. The squo is fine, the plan will fail, the AFF causes harm. (Disad)
2AC goals: respond to ALL arguments made in the 1NC. Extend cards from the 1ac that will help you beat the Neg.
Debate speeches in order: 1ac, 1nc, 2ac, Neg block (2nc & 1nr), 1ar, 2nr, 2ar.
Neg block goals: Respond to arguments in the 2AC. The arguments should be DIVIDED between speeches.
1AR goals: Build on 2AC cards and answer Neg block arguments. Focus on arguments you're winning.
2NR goals: Final Neg speech. Prove the AFF plan is worse than the status quo.
2AR goals: Prove the plan is better than the squo. Include an overview.
Who talks when: The person who just spoke answers the cross X. The person who is not about to speak asks the questions. The person who is about to speak can prep their speech.
5 Purposes of Cross X. -Clarify points and gather info -Expose errors -Set up arguments -Obtain admissions -Save prep time
How to expose errors in CX Find flaws in logic (chains of events) Find author qualifications and the year it was published
Set up arguments Make your opponents interpret their arguments that makes your arguments seem better.
Obtaining Admissions Get your opponents to admit that something they said is wrong or not relevant.
How to answer CX Answer honestly, say you don't know, don't make new claims, refer to evidence and avoid hypotheticals.
Four parts of a DA Uniqueness, Link, Internal Link, Impact.
Impact calculus arguments Magnitude, probability, timeframe.

Third and fourth card of the diplomacy advantage Dziatkowiec 23 How the plan will stop miscalculation, Arctic science will help Russian participation.
Final card of the diplomacy advantage Devyatkin 22 Russia will say yes to the plan.
1NC appeasement DA overview The war in Ukraine will end and become a stalemate as all of russia's supplies are drained. If we appease them, Russia will think we think research is more important than Ukraine, forcing concession on them. W/o Ukraine a nuclear will happen.
2AC's appeasement DA response Ukraine will lose the war and Trump is already appeasing Russia. Scientific cooperation isn't appeasement and the group that's currently working with Russia proves no appeasement. The war will also be contained. The polar council will also stop wars.
