Minerals

Exam 2 Topic 1

Whatever Answer
Elements & Minerals - 87 naturally occurring elements. 12 of which are found in earth's crust in <1% and make up 99% of the mass of the crust - 70% of the crust is Oxygen & Silicon
Minerals are Made of Elements Atoms --> Element --> Minerals --> Rocks
Rare Earth Metals - Neodymium --> Airpods - Lanthanum --> Defense/Night Vision Goggles
Mineral Classes - Silicates - Halides - Sulfides - Sulfates - Oxides - Native Metals - Carbonates
Silicates - Major rock-forming minerals - Silicon-Oxygen Tetrahedron - Can be bonded in different configurations which determines appearance, hardness, etc.
Over 4000 known minerals composed of elements - Single Element - Simple compounds - Complex compound
Rock Types Igneous, Sedimentary, Metamorphic
Gemstones are Minerals
Diamond 1 - simple carbon mineral - intense heat and pressure - Graphite --> intense heat and pressure --> diamond - diamond shape from atomic crystal structure
Kimberlite (Pipes) - Rocks that have diamonds in them delivered to the crust near the surface by violent eruptions of magma from upper mantle - Eruptions billion years ago result in deep cones of kimberlite pipes
Diamond Properties - Hardest naturally occurring substance (Mohs 10) - High thermal conductivity (cold) - Carbon atoms are tightly packed - Short strong atomic bonds - Very dense -- conducts heat and bends light
Graphite Properties -

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
