| hydro | the part of the Earth thats made of water |
| bio | part of Earth where life exists |
| atmosphere | layer of gasses surrounding the Eart |
| geosphere | solid part of the Earth: crust, mantle and core |
| abiotic | nonliving components of an ecosystem: sunlight, water, temp |
| biotic | living components of an ecosystem: plants, animals, micro organisms |

| herbivore | eats only plants consumer |
| carnivore | eats only animals |
| omnivore | eats both plants and animals |

| primary succession | the process of ecological succession that begins in an area where no life previously existed ex: a glacier melting |
| secondary succession | process of ecological succession that occurs in an area where a disturbance has removed the existing community but left the soil intact ex: forest fire |
| ecology | the study of interactions among and between organisms and their physical environment. |
| scavengers | consumes the carcasses of other animals ( that are already dead) |
| habitat | the general place where an organism lives |
| limiting factors | resources that can limit the population gowth |
| successsion | growth of an ecosystem |
| pioneer organisms | the 1st species colonize barren areas |
| climax community | a mature stable community that's the final stage of succession |
