SS Slaves

QuestionAnswer
Before 1640 were slaves legal? No.
What did Massachusetts do in 1641? They made slaves legal.
What did Connecticut do in 1660? Connecticut didn't allow people of African descent to serve in the military.
What did Virginia do in 1670? They made lifetime enslavement the "normal" condition for people of African descent.
What did Virginia do in 1680? They declared the status of a child was determined by the status of the mother. If the mother was enslaved the child was too.
What did South Carolina do in 1696? They required slave owners to provide clothing for enslaved people. Owners were also allowed to treat or punish enslaved people however they wanted.
