| Atom | the smallest unit of an element that keeps the element's properties |
| Molecule | Two or more of the same elements chemically bonded (or more than one of the same molecule chemically bonded together) |
| compound | Two or more DIFFERENT elements bonded together |
| element | a pure substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances by chemical means, and it is made of only one type of atom |
| reactant | the starting materials in a chemical reaction |
| product | the new substances formed after the reaction occurs |
| physical change | alters a substance's appearance, shape, or state but doesn't change its chemical makeup; no new substance is formed |
| Chemical Reaction (chemical change) | a process in which one or more substances, the reactants, are converted to one or more different substances, the products |
| Law of Conservation of Mass | in a closed system, mass is neither created nor destroyed during a chemical or physical reaction |
| Law of Conservation of Atoms | atoms are neither created nor destroyed in a chemical reaction; they are simply rearranged |
| Chemical Bond | the force that holds atoms together to form molecules and compounds |
