1641 Massachusetts colony made slavery legal.
1660 Connecticut did not allow Africa descent to serve in the military.
1670 Virginia made lifetime enslavement the normal condition for people of African descent.
1680 Virginia declared the status of the mother. If the mother was enslaved, the child would be too.
1696 South Carolina required slave owners to provide clothing for their enslaved people. Owners would punish and treat however.
1702 New York made it illegal to do business with an enslaved person without permission from their owner.
1705 New York made it legal to execute enslaved runaways who were caught.
1723 Enslaved people in Virginia were not allowed to meet in large groups.
1740 South Carolina made it illegal to teach enslaved people to read and write.
