| Rebublic | a state in which supreme power is held by the people and their elected representatives, and which has an elected or nominated president rather than a monarch. |
| Ordinance | a piece of legislation enacted by a municipal authority. |
| Depreciate | diminish in value over a period of time. |
| Depression | a common and serious mental health condition characterized by persistent feelings of sadness, loss of interest, and low energy that interfere with daily life |
| Manumission | release from slavery. |
| Proportional | corresponding in size or amount to something else. |
| Compromise | an agreement or a settlement of a dispute that is reached by each side making concessions. |
| Federalism | a principle or system of government in which several states form a unity but remain independent in internal affairs. |
| Legislative branch | the part of the U.S. government, called Congress, that is responsible for making federal laws. |
| Executive branch | the part of government responsible for implementing, enforcing, and administering the laws passed by the legislative branch |
