Bicameral: having, consisting of, or based on two legislative chambers (see chamber entry 1 sense 4a)
Republic: A government in which the power belongs to a body of citizens entitled to vote and is exercised by the leaders and representatives elected by those citizens to govern according to law
Ordinance: an authoritative decree or direction : order
Depreciate: to lower in honor or esteem
Depression: an act of depressing or a state of being depressed: such as
Manumission the act or process of manumitting especially : formal emancipation from slavery
Proportional: corresponding in size, degree, or intensity
Compromise: settlement of differences by arbitration or by consent reached by mutual concessions
Legislative Branch: The legislative branch is the branch of government responsible for making laws
Executive Branch: The executive branch is one of the three branches of the U.S. government, responsible for enforcing and carrying out the laws
Electoral College: a body of electors
Judicial Branch: The judicial branch is one of three branches of the U.S. government that interprets laws and administers justice through the court system
Check and Balances: a system where governmental branches (legislative, executive, and judicial) share and limit each other's power to prevent any one from becoming too powerful
Amendment: the process of altering or amending a law or document (such as a constitution) by parliamentary or constitutional procedure
Federalism: the distribution of power in an organization (such as a government) between a central authority and the constituent (see constituent entry 2 sense 1) units
