TermDefinition
Bicameral Having two branches or chambers.
Republic a state in which supreme power is held by the people and their elected representatives, and which has an elected or nominated president rather than a monarch.
Ordinance A piece of legislation enacted by a municipal authority.
Depreciate diminish in value over a period of time.
Depression A severe and prolonged downturn in economic activity that is much more significant than a recession
Federalism A principle or system of government in which several states form a unity but remain independent in internal affairs.
Judicial Branch a principle or system of government in which several states form a unity but remain independent in internal affairs.
Legislative Branch The part of the U.S. government, called Congress, that is responsible for making federal laws
Manumission Release from slavery.
Proportional Proportional representation is achieved by any electoral system under which subgroups of an electorate are reflected proportionately in the elected body. The concept applies mainly to political divisions among voters
Compromise compromise is an agreement reached by different groups or parties through mutual concessions to settle a dispute or achieve a common goal.
executive branch the part of government responsible for implementing, enforcing, and administering the laws passed by the legislative branch
electoral college a body of people representing the states of the US, who formally cast votes for the election of the president and vice president.
checks and balances a system of government where power is divided among different branches, with each branch having the ability to limit and control the other branches to prevent any one from becoming too powerful.
amendment a formal addition or alteration to a legal document like a constitution, statute, or legislative bill
