Muscle Tissue A&P2

Muscle Tissue info for Anatomy and Physiology 2

QuestionAnswer
How are the tissues and organs of the muscular system unique? The tissues and organs of the muscular system are unique in that they are able to contract, producing movement.
The muscular system ___, ___, ____, ___ The muscular system produces motion, maintains posture, stabilizes joints, and generates heat.
All muscle tissues have what 4 characteristics? All muscle tissues have these 4 characteristics: 1. Excitability 2. Contractility 3. Extensibility 4. Elasticity
Excitability is what? Excitability is the ability of muscles to respond to stimulus.
Contractility is what? Contractility is the ability of muscles to shorten when stimulated.
Extensibility is what? Extensibility is the ability of muscles to lengthen or stretch, even past their original shape.
Elasticity is what? Elasticity is the ability of the muscles to recoil or bounce back to their original shape/length.
True or False: Both Skeletal and Cardiac muscles are striated. True: Both Skeletal and Cardiac muscles are striated.
True or False: Only Cardiac muscles are uninucleate. False: Cardiac muscles are & Smooth muscles uninucleate.
True or False: Smooth muscles are arranged in uniform layers while Skeletal muscles are branched. False: Smooth muscles are arranged in uniform layers while Skeletal muscles are cylindrical.
Skeletal muscles are found where? Skeletal muscles are found throughout the body, attached to bones.
True or False: Skeletal muscles are found in the heart, walls of internal organs, blood vessel walls, eyes, skin, liver, and pancreas. False: Skeletal muscles are not found in the heart, walls of internal organs, blood vessel walls, eyes, skin, liver, or pancreas.
True or False: Skeletal muscles are multinucleated. True: Skeletal muscles are multinucleated.
True or False: Skeletal muscles either contract slowly or very quickly. True: Skeletal muscles either contract slowly or very quickly.
True or False: Both cardiac and smooth muscles are voluntarily controlled while skeletal muscles are not. False: Both cardiac and smooth muscles are not voluntarily controlled while skeletal muscles are.
Cardiac muscles are mostly slow & steady, except during what? Cardiac muscles are mostly slow & steady, except during short periods of activity like exercise.
where are cardiac muscles found? Cardiac muscles are found in the heart, more specifically the heart wall.
Cardiac muscles are also known as what? Cardiac muscles are also known as cardiomyocytes.
Muscle cells in general are also known as what? Muscle cells in general are also known as myocytes.
Skeletal muscles are also known as what? Skeletal muscles are also known as skeletal myocytes or muscle fibers
Smooth muscles are also known as what? Smooth muscles are also known as smooth myocytes.
True or False: Smooth muscles are non-striated. True: Smooth muscles are non-striated.
Smooth muscles are found where? Smooth muscles are found in the walls of hollow internal organs and structures like the stomach, blood vessels, or lymph vessels.
True or False: Smooth muscles are also found in the iris of the eye and skin. True: Smooth muscles are found in the iris controlling the size of the pupil, while they are also found in the skin as arrector pili muscles.
Smooth muscles contract slowly for ___ periods of time. Smooth muscles contract slowly for long periods of time.
Name 2 differences between skeletal and smooth muscles. 2+ differences between skeletal and smooth muscles are one is multinucleated while the other is uninucleated, one is striated while the other is not, one is voluntarily controlled while the other is not.
Name 2 differences between skeletal and cardiac muscles. 2+ differences between skeletal and smooth muscles are one is branched while the other is cylindrical, one is uninucleated while the other is not, one is found in the heart the others found across the body.
Name 2 differences between smooth and cardiac muscles. 2 differences between skeletal and smooth muscles are one is arranged in uniform layers while the other is branched, one is found within the heart while the others found within the walls of internal organs.
What is the microscopic structure of a muscle from biggest to smallest? The microscopic structure of a muscle from biggest to smallest is Muscle, Fascicle, muscle fiber, myofibril, and myofilaments.
Fascicles are what? Fascicles are bundles of muscle fibers grouped together within a muscle
Muscle fibers are what? Muscle fibers are long, thin, cylindrical muscle cells that contract to produce movement, and are covered in sarcoplasmic reticulum which helps transmits impulses to the muscle fibers.
What is sarcoplasmic reticulum? A special type of smooth endoplasmic reticulum in muscle cells that stores and releases calcium, which is needed and helps trigger muscle contraction
Myofibrils are what? Myofibrils are thin, thread-like organelles of the muscle fibers, starting in long, striated units called sarcomeres.
Myofilaments are what? Tiny protein strands inside myofibrils that slide past each other to make muscles contract.
How many types of myofilaments are there? There are 2 types of myofilaments, acting(thin) and myosin(thick)
What allows the muscles fibers to slide and keeps them from bursting? Membranes allow the muscles fibers to slide and keeps them from bursting?
Epimysium covers what? Epimysium covers the whole muscle.
Perimysium covers what? Perimysium covers a fascicle.
Endomysium covers what? Endomysium covers an individual's muscle fibers.
The prefix a/an means what? The prefix a/an means without.
