TermDefinition
Resource Anything that is useful to help create, build, complete tasks, or reach goals.
Natural Resource Materials or substances found in nature that people use for living and making goods.
Human Resource The people who provide labor, skills, and knowledge to produce goods or services.
Capital Resource Tools, machines, factories, technology, and money used to produce goods and services.
Renewable Resource A natural resource that can be replaced or regenerated in a short period (e.g., trees, water).
Nonrenewable Resource A natural resource that cannot be replaced quickly once it is used up (e.g., oil, coal).
Inexhaustible Resource A natural resource that is unlimited and will not run out (e.g., sunlight, wind).
Distribution The way resources are spread out or shared across different regions.
Scarcity When there is not enough of a resource to meet everyone’s needs.
Conservation Protecting and using resources wisely so they last longer.
Sustainable Development Meeting today’s needs without using up resources needed by future generations.
Human-Environment Interaction The ways human activities impact the environment and how the environment impacts humans.
Adaptation When people change their behavior or way of living to fit their environment.
Modification When people physically change their environment.
Carbon Emissions The release of carbon dioxide into the air, mostly from burning fossil fuels.
Offset Compensating for emissions or environmental damage by taking actions that balance it out.
Fossil Fuels Nonrenewable energy sources like oil, coal, and natural gas formed from ancient plants and animals.
Greenhouse Gases Gases that trap heat in Earth’s atmosphere and contribute to climate change (e.g., carbon dioxide, methane).
Paris Agreement A 2015 international treaty where countries set goals to limit climate change.
Salinization Build-up of salt in soil, often due to irrigation, making it hard for plants to grow.
