Classification of life

QuestionAnswer
Viruses Are tiny non-cellular structures/ that consists of only a protein coat inside / which is a strand of nucleic acid, either DNA or RNA
Obligate Parasites organisms which can only replicate or survive when in a host cell
Classification Is the arrangement of organisms into groups based on similarities and differences
Taxonomy the study of classification
Species A group of organisms that are capable of naturally interbreeding with each other to produce fertile offspring
Prokaryotic cells that don't have a nucleus or membrane enclosed organelles
eukaryotic cells have a nucleus and cell organelles, all of which are surrounded by membranes
Whittaker's five kingdom system Monera, Protista, Fungi, Plantae, Animalia
Aristotle divided organism into plants and animals and then where they lived
Linnaeus created minimal naming system - named with 2 names: genus name ( with a capital letter) and Species name e.g Homo sappiens
Woese's 3 Domain Systems - SIX KINGDOMS ( Based on ribosomal differences in RNA and DNA & cell membrane structure) Kingdom Bacteria Kingdom Archea kingdom eukaryotic - Protista, Fungi, Plantae, Animalia
Bacteria Single celled, Prokaryotic, found everywhere - air, soil, land, water
Protista predominantly found in water environments, single celled = Amoeba or simple multi-cellular organisms = Algae, have membrane enclosed nucleus
Archaea microscopic single celled prokaryotes, like bacteria, but genetically different. No nucleus or membrane bound organelles
Fungi Play vital role in break down of dead organic matter. Unable to make own food, multi cellular
Plants seed producing plants=divided into flowering and non flowering. Complex multi cellular organisms
Animals eukaryotic, no cells also, heterotrophic, subdivided into vertebrates and invertebrates
Phylogeny Classification of organisms based on their evolutionary history
Dichotomous Key series of questions which contains two chases, the questions are based on qualitative and quantitative features. Identifies unknown species
