Vocabulary from Unit 0 and Unit 1

TermDefinition
Fair test a scientific experiment where only one variable, the independent variable, is changed while all other conditions, the controlled variables, are kept the same
Independent variable The independent variable is the thing you're testing in an experiment to see if it causes an effect in another variable(the dependent variable).
Dependent Variable Is what you measure in the experiment and what is affected during the experiment.
Constant Variable constant is a variable that could change, but that the experimenter keeps constant in order to more clearly see if the independent variable has an effect.
Hypothesis / Claim a proposed explanation or answer to the research question that can be tested through experiments
Conclusion An explanation or interpretation of the data that tries to answer whether the hypothesis was correct or incorrect.
Graduated Cylinder An instrument used to measure the volume of liquids directly and small solids using the displacement method. The preferred unit of measurement is ml.
Beaker An instrument used to hold liquids and solids. It is not used for measurement
Syringe An instrument used for holding and measuring small volumes of liquids or gases. The preferred unit of measurement is ml.
Digital Scale An instrument used to measure the mass of a substance. The preferred unit of measurement uses grams.
Ruler An instrument used to measure the length, width, height or other dimensions of a substance. It is used to determine the volume of rectangular solids using the formula, L * W * H. The unit of measurement is cm.
Matter The stuff everything in the universe is made of. The most important properties of matter are mass and volume. If something does not have mass or volume it is not matter.
Mass A measure of the amount of the substance
Volume A measure of the size the substance takes up
Observation A description of a substance
Inference A prediction or interpretation of an observation or set of observations.
Qualitative Data/Qualitative Observation Data consisting of words, pictures, observations, and symbols, and other information that can’t be expressed as a number
Quantitative Data/Quantitative Observation Data consisting of numbers, measurements, and calculation of numbers.
Thermometer A tool used to measure the temperature of a substance. The unit of measurement is Celsius.
Data Data is any information that is collected during an investigation. Data includes and is broader than evidence.
Evidence Evidence is the data that is used to support an inference. Evidence is a subset of data.
Claim An answer to a question that a writer is using evidence and inferences to support or refute.
flask Glassware that has a flat bottom and curved sides that is used for holding liquids or gasses(with a stopper).
Spatula/Scapula A spoonlike instrument for measuring or stirring
Displacement The method of determining the volume of solid by subtracting the initial volume from the final volume because whatever is placed in the water forces the water level higher.
Chemistry The study of the properties of matter and how matter changes during chemical reactions
variable Anything that could possibly effect an experiment
Physical Properties The characteristics of a substance that can be directly observed and are used to identify the substance
States of Matter One of the three forms matter takes--solid, liquid, and gas.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
