| Atoll | Ring-shaped coral reef, island, or series of islets that surrounds a central lagoon. |
| Cyclone | A cyclone is a large-scale rotating storm system similar to a hurricane or typhoon but it is specific to the Indian Ocean. |
| Monsoons | Seasonal wind patterns that occur mainly in South Asia. |
| Subcontinent | Landmass that is geographically and culturally part of the continent, but has clear political or physical distinctions. Often divided by physical barriers such as mountains or rivers. |
| British Raj | The period of British rule over the Indian subcontinent from 1858-1947. |
| Isolationism | Policy of avoiding political or economic entanglements with other countries. |
| Partition | Partition as related to India refers to when British India was divided into two separate countries, India (mainly Hindu) and Pakistan (maining Muslim) upon gaining independence in 1947. |
| Food Security | The state of having reliable access to a sufficient quantity of affordable, nutritious food. |
| Microcredit | A financial service that provides small loans to individuals or groups, typically in developing regions, to support entrepreneurship and alleviate poverty. |
| Caste System | A hierarchical social structure that divides people into groups based on birth, with each group having a different social status and set of rights. |
| Reincarnation | Rebirth in new bodies or forms of life. |
| Drought | A prolonged period of below-average precipitation, leading to water shortages that negatively impact agriculture, ecosystems, and human populations. |
| Interconnectedness | The way people, places, economies, and environments are linked and dependent on each other through systems of interaction. |
| Interdependence | The mutual reliance between people, countries, economies, or ecosystems, where each depends on the other for resources, goods, services, or support. |
| Globalization | The process of increasing interconnectedness and interdependence among countries through the exchange of goods, services, information, technology, culture, and people. |
| Outsourcing | When a business hires a third party to perform tasks that would normally be done by its own employees. |
