TermDefinition
Atom Basic unit of matter
Nucleus The center of the atom where protons and neutrons are found.
Electron One of the three subatomic particles, is negatively charged and found in outside of the nucleus .
Element A pure substance that consists of entirely one type of atom. Examples: Au-gold, Na- sodium, anything from the periodic table of elements.
Isotope atoms of the same element that have the same number of protons but a different number of neutrons.
compound a thing that is composed of two or more separate elements.
ionic bond Ionic bonding happens when oppositely charged ions attract each other, forming ionic compounds.
Covalent bond A covalent bond is a chemical bond formed when two atoms share electrons.
molecule A molecule is a group of two or more atoms bonded together chemically.
homeostasis Homeostasis is the process of maintaining stable internal conditions in an organism.
hydrogen bond A hydrogen bond is a weak attraction between a hydrogen atom and another electronegative atom.
cohesion the action or state of sticking together
Adhesion the action or process of stick fast to a surface or object.
mixture the process of mixing or being mixed.
solution a liquid mixture in which the minor component (the solute) is uniformly distributed within the major component (the solvent)
solute the minor component in a solution, dissolved in the solvent.
solvent able to dissolve other substances
suspension Things that are not resolved in the the solvent
pH scale a measure of how acidic or basic a substance is, ranging from 0 to 14
acid a molecule or other entity that can donate a proton or accept an electron pair in reactions.
buffer a solution that resists changes in pH when acid or alkali is added to it. Buffers typically involve a weak acid or alkali together with one of its salts.
