| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Atom | Basic unit of matter |
| Nucleus | The center of the atom where protons and neutrons are found. |
| Electron | One of the three subatomic particles, is negatively charged and found in outside of the nucleus . |
| Element | A pure substance that consists of entirely one type of atom. Examples: Au-gold, Na- sodium, anything from the periodic table of elements. |
| Isotope | atoms of the same element that have the same number of protons but a different number of neutrons. |
| compound | a thing that is composed of two or more separate elements. |
| ionic bond | Ionic bonding happens when oppositely charged ions attract each other, forming ionic compounds. |
| Covalent bond | A covalent bond is a chemical bond formed when two atoms share electrons. |
| molecule | A molecule is a group of two or more atoms bonded together chemically. |
| homeostasis | Homeostasis is the process of maintaining stable internal conditions in an organism. |
| hydrogen bond | A hydrogen bond is a weak attraction between a hydrogen atom and another electronegative atom. |
| cohesion | the action or state of sticking together |
| Adhesion | the action or process of stick fast to a surface or object. |
| mixture | the process of mixing or being mixed. |
| solution | a liquid mixture in which the minor component (the solute) is uniformly distributed within the major component (the solvent) |
| solute | the minor component in a solution, dissolved in the solvent. |
| solvent | able to dissolve other substances |
| suspension | Things that are not resolved in the the solvent |
| pH scale | a measure of how acidic or basic a substance is, ranging from 0 to 14 |
| acid | a molecule or other entity that can donate a proton or accept an electron pair in reactions. |
| buffer | a solution that resists changes in pH when acid or alkali is added to it. Buffers typically involve a weak acid or alkali together with one of its salts. |
| base | |
| monomer | |
| polymer | |
| monosaccharide | |
| amino acid | a simple organic compound containing both a carboxyl (—COOH) and an amino (—NH2) group. |
| lipid | fatty compounds that perform a variety of functions in your body |
| protein | |
| nucleic acid | |
| carbohydrate | |
| Disaccharide |
