Week 7: Assignment Physiology
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Cell Structure | The basic parts of a cell that allow it to function, including the membrane, cytoplasm, and nucleus. |
| Articulations | Joints where two or more bones meet, allowing movement or support. |
| Muscle Contraction | The process where muscle fibers shorten and produce movement when stimulated by nerves. |
| Myosin | A thick protein filament in muscle fibers that pulls on actin to make muscles contract. |
| Actin | A thin protein filament in muscle fibers that works with myosin to help muscles contract. |
| Nerve Signaling | The way nerves send electrical and chemical messages through the body to control actions and responses. |
| Neurotransmitter | A chemical messenger released by neurons to send signals to other cells. |
| Stimulus-gated channel | A channel in a cell membrane that opens or closes when triggered by a specific stimulus (like touch or chemicals). |
| Action potential | A sudden electrical signal that travels along a nerve or muscle cell to send information. |
| Ionic channel. | A pathway in the cell membrane that lets ions (charged particles) move in and out of the cell. |
| Local potential. | A small, temporary change in a cell’s electrical charge caused by a stimulus before an action potential happens. |
