Biology ch 2.1 vocab

TermDefinition
Atom The smallest basic unit of matter.
Element one particular unit of atom.
Proton the dense center of an atom with a positive electric charge.
Neutron the dense center of an atom with no charge at all.
isotope a chemical element with the same number of protons but different number of neutrons.
ion an atom that has lost or gained one or more electrons.
compound a substance made of atoms of different elements bonded together in a certain ratio.
molecule two or more atoms held together by covalent bonds.
ionic bond forms through the electrical force between oppositely charged ions.
covalent bond forms when atoms share a part of electrons.
