| biotic factor | Any living part of the environment with which an organism might interact |
| abiotic | nonliving parts of an ecosystem |
| climate | the weather in some location averaged over some long period of time |
| atmosphere | Layers of gases surrounding the earth. |
| evaporation | the process by which water molecules in liquid water escape into the air as water vapor |
| condensation | the change of state from a gas to a liquid |
| precipitation | Any form of water that falls from clouds and reaches Earth's surface. |
| nitrogen fixation | process of converting nitrogen gas into nitrogen compounds that plants can absorb and use |
| Law of Conservation of Mass | Matter cannot be created or destroyed |
| photosynthesis | Plants use the sun's energy to convert water and carbon dioxide into sugars |
| chemosynthesis | when organisms use chemical energy in matter to produce food |
| food chain | series of steps in an ecosystem in which organisms transfer energy by eating and being eaten |
| food web | A community of organisms where there are several interrelated food chains |
| energy pyramid | diagram that compares energy used by producers, primary consumers, and other trophic levels |
| producer | An organism that can make its own food. |
| consumer | An organism that eats other organisms |
| herbivore | eat only plants |
| omnivore | An organism that eats both plants and animals. |
| carnivore | meat eaters |
| decomposer | Organisms that break down the dead remains of other organisms |
| transpiration | Evaporation of water from the leaves of a plant |
