colony A group of people in one place who are ruled by a parent country elsewhere.
conquistador A Spanish conqueror of the Americas
contagious disease a disease that is easily spread from one host to another
Northwest Passage A water route from the Atlantic to the Pacific through northern Canada and along the northern coast of Alaska. Sought by navigators since the 16th century.
East Indies A term used to describe an area in South and South East Asia, which consisted of India, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia, and most of Indonesia; Europeans traded for cotton, indigo and spices.
Americas the land masses of North America, Central America, and South America, People in this region developed complex urban societies and empires without the benefit of large pack animals or Iron technology.
astrolabe An instrument used by sailors to determine their location by observing the position of the stars and planets
explorer a person who travels in search of new geographical information
Age of Exploration Time period during the 15th and 16th centuries when Europeans searched for new sources of wealth and for easier trade routes to China and India. Resulted in the discovery of North and South America by the Europeans.
cash crop farm crop raised to be sold for money
cultural region a region defined by similar culture traits and landscape features. an area of the world where people develop similar ways of life, especially similar customs and beliefs
culture the enduring behaviors, ideas, attitudes, values, and traditions shared by a group of people and transmitted from one generation to the next
mesa a flat-topped hill with steep sides
gorge a narrow, deep valley with steep sides
nomadic moving from place to place often following sources of food
artifact an object, such as a tool or clothing, made by a group of humans
