skeletal tissues and skeletons
| Term | Definition |

| bone | any of the pieces of hard whitish tissue making up the skeleton in humans and other vertebrates. |
| cartilage | firm, whitish, flexible connective tissue found in various forms in the larynx and respiratory tract, |
| ligament | a short band of tough, flexible fibrous connective tissue which connects two bones or cartilages or holds together a joint. |
| tendons | Tough cords of connective tissue that connect muscles to bones |
| spongy bone | The porous, honeycomb-like tissue inside bones that contains marrow |
| axial skeleton | The central part of the skeleton, including the skull, vertebral column, ribs, and sternum |
| appendicular Skelton | The part of the skeleton that includes the bones of the limbs and the shoulder and pelvic girdles |
| musculoskeletal system | The combination of the skeletal system and the muscular system |
| compact bone | The hard, dense outer layer |
| bone tissue | Living tissue that provides the framework for the body. It has two main types |
