Geometric Figures: Transformations, Similarity and Angle Relationships
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Alternate Exterior Angles | When two lines are cut by a transversal, a pair of angles on opposite sides of the transversal and outside the two lines |
| Alternate interior angles | When two lines are cut by a transversal, a pair of angles on opposite sides of the transversal and between the two lines |
| Center of dilation | A fixed point from which a figure is dilated |
| Corresponding angles | Angles in the same relative position when two lines are cut by a transversal |
| Dilation | A transformation that makes a scale copy of a figure. It is a proportional shrinking or enlargement of a figure |
| Exterior angles | When you extend one side of a polygon, the angle between the extended side and the adjacent side. This angle forms a linear pair with the adjacent interior angles of the polygon |
| Linear pair | Two angles that are adjacent and supplementary |
| Proportional relationship | When one quantity is a constant multiple of another quantitiy |
| Same side exterior angles | When two lines are cut by a transversal, a pair of angles, on the same side of the transversal and outside the two lines |
| Same side interior angles | When two lines are. Cut by a transversal, a pair of angles, on the same side of the transversal and between the two lines |
| Scale factor | A factor that relates the corresponding side lengths of a figure and a scale copy of the figure |
| Sequence of transformations | More than one transformation; the transformations can produce congruent or similar figures |
| Similar figures | Having the same shape; produced if there is a sequence or rigid transformations and/or dilations that maps one figure onto the second |
| Transversal | A line that cuts two or more lines; the lines cut may or may not be parallel |
