point of view answers the question, “Who is telling the story?”; the character view from which a story is told (first, second, third person limited, third person omniscient)
plot the main events of a play, novel, movie, planned and presented by the writer
characterization a description of the distinctive nature or features of someone or something
setting the time, place, and environment where the narrative takes place
theme a universal idea, lesson, or message explored throughout a work of literature
inference drawing a conclusion based on evidence, reasoning, and prior knowledge, rather than on information that is explicitly stated
evidence specific details, examples, or quotes from the text that prove your ideas or your answer to a question
literary genres a category or type of book that shares similar characteristics, like style, content, and themes; four main types in literature are fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and drama
perspective how that narrator/character of a story sees and understands the story based on their unique experiences, feelings, and biases
narrative writing a sequence of events, experiences, or the like, whether true or fictitious.
prefix a word part added to the beginning of a root word that changes the word’s meaning
suffix a word part added to the end of a root word that changes the word’s meaning
connotation a word’s added feeling, idea, or association that comes to mind in addition to its dictionary meaning; can be positive, negative, or neutral
denotation a word’s literal dictionary definition; denotation = definition
context clues used to help you figure out a word’s meaning from other words in the sentence or paragraph when you don’t have the word’s definition or don’t know the word
