What are Joints? Also called articulations. Sites where two or more bones meet
What are the two functions of Joints? 1) Give skeleton mobility 2) Hold skeleton together (joints are the weakest parts of the skeleton)
What are the two classifications of Joints? 1) Structural 2) Functional
What are the three types of Structural classifications of Joints? 1) Fibrous 2) Cartilaginous 3) Synovial
What is the Structural classifications of Joints? There are three types based on what material binds the joints whether a cavity is present.
What material is a Fibrous Joint made of? Is there a cavity present? Material = Dense regular connective tissue, primarily collagen fibers. No cavity is present
What material is a Cartilaginous Joint made of? Is there a cavity present? Material = Hyaline cartilage or fibrocartilage No cavity is present
What material is a Synovial Joint made of? Is there a cavity present? Material = Hyaline cartilage covering the ends of bones, a joint capsule enclosing the joint, a synovial membrane that lines the capsule, and synovial fluid that fills the space between the bones. A cavity IS present
What is the Functional classifications of Joints? There are three types based on the movement that the joint allows
What are the three types of Functional classifications of Joints? Synarthroses, amphiarthroses, and diarthroses
What are Synarthroses Joints? Immovable joints
What are Amphiarthroses Joints? Slightly movable joints: Slightly movable and immovable joints predom
