| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| tracheids | tubular cells tapered at each end that help transport water |
| stigma | sticky tip of a flowers carpel |
| phloem | tissue that moves sugar from leaves to roots |
| guard cells | cells that control the opening and closing of the stomata |
| epidermis | dermal tissue that covers all parts of the plant |
| leaf | broad, flat structure of plant that traps light energy for photosynthesis |
| gymnosperm | a plant that bears its seeds directly on the surface of cones, evergreens |
| apical meristem | meristem that causes plants to grow in length, found in tips of roots/stems |
| companion cells | nucleated cell that helps manage the transport of sugar |
| sieve tube member | tubular cells lacking a nucleus that transport sugar |
| vascular tissue | tissue make up of tubelike, elongated cells which water and food are transported |
| cuticle | waxy, waterproof coating of stems and leaves |
| xylem | plant tissue that transport water and minerals |
| meristematic | plant tissue responsible for plant growth |
| root | plant organ that absorb materials from the soil, anchors plant in the ground |
| stem | part of plant that provides support and allows plant to grow taller |
| lateral meristem | meristem that causes the plant to grow in width |
| angiosperm | A flowering plant, it bears a seed with a layer of tissue that protects the seed |
| petal | This brightly colored structure is just inside the sepals, attracts pollinators |
| ground tissue | tissue made up of all the cells that lie between dermal and vascular tissue |
| vessel elements | continuous tubes which water moves through |
| dermal tissue | tissue type that contains epidermal cells and root hair cells |
| stomata | openings in leaf that control the exchange of gases |
| bryophyrtes | non vascular plants that include mosses |
| mesophyll cells | photosynthesis takes place in these cells |
| anther | pollen producing, male part of the flower |
