| iron curtain | A political barrier that isolated the peoples of Eastern Europe after WWII, restricting their ability to travel outside the region. (Churchill thought it was bad that the Soviet pretty much ruled land west of this " iron curtain " |
| cold war | A conflict that was between the US and the Soviet Union. The nations never directly confronted each other on the battlefield but deadly threats went on for years. (Raced to do things) |
| truman doctrine | 1947, President Truman's policy of providing economic and military aid to any country threatened by communism or totalitarian ideology, mainly helped Greece and Turkey |
| Berlin blockade | The blockade was a Soviet attempt to starve out the allies in Berlin in order to gain supremacy. The blockade was a high point in the Cold War, and it led to the Berlin Airlift. |
| NATO (north atlantic treaty organization) | A 1949 defense alliance initiated by the US, Canada, and 10 Western European nations. (Created out of the Berlin Barrier created by The Soviet Union.) |
| Mao Zedong/ Chiang Kai Shek | 1. Chiang Kai-Shek and his Nationalist Gov't was based in southern and central China and was supported by the Americans 2. Mao Zedong and his People's Liberation Army led a Communist leadership and built a strong base in North China. Led to division between China |

| Chinese Role in the Korean War | China provided military aid to North Korea. They said they would not allow North Korea to fall. (Even after the UN + US took over North Korea) |
| Douglas MacArthur and the Korean War | He was put in charge of the UN force and he begins to invade North Korea and recapture the South Korean capital. China threatens to attack if The southern forces get any closer to the Chinese border. A truce was made in 1953. Truman fires MacArthur because he disobeyed orders. Truman loses popularity. |
| House Un-American Activities Committee | A congressional committee that investigated Communist influence inside and outside the U.S. government in the years following World War II. |
| McCarthyism | The term associated with Senator Joseph McCarthy who led the search for communists in America during the early 1950s through his leadership in the House Un-American Activities Committee. |
| Brinkmanship | A policy of threatening to go to war in response to any enemy aggression. (Willing to threaten to make opposition back off). |
| Satellites | became key during the Cold War in order to monitor enemy missile sites for signs of an impending launch |
| domino effect | A theory that if one nation comes under Communist control, then neighboring nations will also come under Communist control. |
| Marshall Plan | A United States program of economic aid for the reconstruction of Europe (1948-1952) |
